For those of you unfamiliar with BBC Radio1’s Essential Mix, it’s simply the holy grail of dance music. Since 1993, host Pete Tong has been offering weekly guest spots to DJs across the globe to entertain listeners for each two-hour episode. There is no live crowd to read, no lights or stage, and really no rules. As a result, it gives each artist a chance to show off their eclectic tastes, their musical knowledge, and most importantly, their secret productions. A guest spot on the Essential Mix can be a DJ’s chance to take an engaged listener on a journey into sound – it’s now become an honour just to be asked.
Last weekend, Toronto’s very own Zeds Dead took the spotlight on the Essential Mix, and with the world listening, they did not disappoint. Blending a range of their own melodic dubstep and piercing electro, the duo of DC and Hooks delivered a bass-heavy barrage of fan favourites and unreleased tracks. With remixes of the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”, Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” and Marina and the Diamonds’ “Lies”, fans of a wide range of genres might find something to groove to. Adding in a slew of originals off their latest Hot Sauce EP sprinkled through the mid-section, the back half is an ode to the pioneers of bass music, with tracks selected from legends such as RJD2, Pendulum, DJ Shadow, Rusko, and Calyx.
As a group that emerged from the city’s weekly “Bassmentality” parties, it’s exciting Toronto’s own cement themselves as heavy hitters on the international scene. And, the boys have been kind enough to provide a free download and full tracklisting via their Soundcloud page. Check it out!
